We visited the States of Freedom: The Figure in Flux in the Tisch Family Gallery and Koppelman Gallery. The exhibition showcased the sculpture, video, and paintings by contemporary artists Derrick Adams, A. K. Burns, Kate Costello, Harry Dodge, Anna K. E. Lucy Kim, Kiki Kogelnik, Maria Lassnig, Karen C. Moss, Jeanine Loeson, Lorna Simpson, and Alexandria Smith. As a class we did a thorough observation of one of the exhibition pieces by Kiki Kogelnik.

People observed how the artist has likened the clothing with a personality that people wear all day for other people. People also associated the color with happy and outgoing but posture with dead and morbid.

As a group we discussed the painting below. IMG_2313.JPG

I do not remember the artist but we, as a group, decided that this painting paints a grim picture of human future. We looked at the odd proportion of the girl standing holding a plate of cup-cake and some pills. We looked at the pictures of fruits and vegetables on the wall and grocery bag on the floor thrown away carelessly probably telling that eating vegetables and fruits is like an ideal but not practical thing. We might need to eat medicines with cupcakes to remain who we are in the future. We also discussed about how the girl in the background is green and looks almost sinister. We thought she was turned into green color because of the pills. Lastly, but most importantly the goose in the picture who appears to be refusing the pills, if take the pills, will turn into human like figure- similar to the oddly proportioned girl. This paints a grim picture that pills can do miracles but we will be hooked to it and will need to remain on pills to remain functional.

Visitor Lecture

On Wednesday, we had a visitor Juliane Snow Gauron, who defines herself as creative consultant collaborating with a wide range of clients on innovation product design, design strategy, photography and storytelling.

She talked about her projects with different clients any how she comes up with creative works. The way products come to the market is  that the products are designed for some high-end consumers like olympic athletes or mountaineers and since the pool of the those high-end consumers is small the product is sold to the masses to make profit. The design is done keeping a very high end consumer so that it exceeds the expectation of ordinary user. I think that was one takeaway from that session : do not design by keeping ordinary in mind. For example if you are designing pair of shoes design if it will be worn by an athlete looking towards breaking the world record. It will then exceed the expectations of a normal runner. In that sense whatever we design we will be designing it for the Future Human.

Group Project

We are working in teams to design something that would be useful to someone in the future. The future could be 10, 100 or 1000 years from now. Our team has come up with an idea of a device that will help people fall asleep on-the-go and achieve never-achieved state of wakefulness in a very short amount of time. We think will make a great sense in the future when people start traveling more than ever. People will be busier and moving and doing many things at a time, so people may find it harder to fall asleep. When interplanetary travel becomes a commonplace people can no longer depend on days and nights to get the rest and will need to find a better way reseting their brain and body.

Please keep an eye on the portfolio page to learn more about our project 🙂

I appreciate your overview of the last two weeks of class, a great reference if I ever need to review discussions and content! My favorite part was your summary of Julianne’s visit. And the main conclusions about design that you took from her lecture. Excited to read about your group project too!

I like how you described all of the different things we’ve been doing in class and tied them back to the future human concept. I especially liked the point you made about how the guest speaker taught you that we should not design by keeping ordinary in mind. I agree that innovative design doesn’t come from thinking about everyday, but rather from thinking in extremes. For me, looking at the art exhibit helped provoke some thinking about extremes, and things that were out of the ordinary. Thanks for the thoughtful post!
