We are all aware how quickly technology advances. From ginormous computers to computers on desks, computers with CRT monitors to flat screen computers, laptops and hand held devices, from dial-up to broadband internet connection we have come a long way pretty fast.

IoT is one such advancement in technology that is set to rapidly revolutionize the world. The idea of connecting everything to the internet is very exciting. Image a house that knows you; the lights turn on when you wake up in the morning, coffee machine gets to work as you go to the bathroom, you fridge knows that you need to buy some groceries and will make an order for you. It won’t be long before these wild sounding ideas may become reality.

IoT enabled microcontrollers

As fabricating little chips that connect to internet becomes cheap and easy more and more appliances will have capability to connect to the internet. We already have lights that connect to the internet that people can configure to glow in different colors based on some information on the internet like weather or bus information. There will be door locks, alarm systems, backpacks, clothings with capability to connect to the internet. As more and more device get connected to the internet there will be addition of tons of data. And this can be used to make our systems better and make our lives easier.

But like with every other technology there are some flaws with IoT. There are some serious dangers associated with connecting everything with internet. The biggest threat would be the possibility of violation of privacy. What if the microwave in your kitchen is listening to you to sell information to some marketing company who will then target you with car ads and offers of insurance that you had discussed with your wife over dinner one particular night. Or worse, the night lamp has a secret camera that observes you and sends data to other people.

It is no doubt that IoT will make our lives easier and it will revolutionize the way our world works. But we must also slow down and pay attention to how to use IoT enabled devices carefully so that we are safe and secure.
